< BATH HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI LINK >

                                   An Internet email newsletter

                        connecting the alumni of Bath High School

                  Volume 2, Number 1 ------------------ February 2002

                                      Larry L. Oatman, Editor

<HOME ROOM LINK>

Welcome to <BATH LINK> a newsletter for and about Bath alumni --

anyone who graduated or attended Bath High School. It features

information about classmates, reunions, school events, teachers, plus web

site links, a pop quiz, some humor and other items of alumni interest. The

newsletter, due to having 45 graduating classes (and all are important), is

somewhat long. It is suggested that if you don't have time to read it all

right now, save it in a special folder named, "BATH LINK," and then read it

when you do have the time.

<BATH SCHOOL BOARD LINK>

   Congratulations to the two new school board members, Rob McPheron

(BHS '72) and Bob Birkemeier, who were elected from a field of five

candidates last November. McPheron, who works in sales and distribution

at BOC Gases and has been greatly involved in the Bath Parent Teacher

Society for eight years, received 925 in his second election bid, while

Birkemeier, an account executive with ConWay Central Express, received

841 votes.

   The board faces two big challenges -- replacing Supt. Paul Assenheimer,

who retires at the end of this school year, and passing a 3.25-mill

permanent improvement levy in November. Supt. Assenheimer retires after

43 years in education, the past seven at Bath.

<BOOSTER CLUB LINK>

A NEW Booster Club is being formed as an umbrella organization for all of

the Bath athletic organizations. At a Jan. 23 meeting, the proposed club's

purpose and goals were explained. It would serve as a major fund-raising

organization to the benefit (in alpha order) baseball, basketball,

cheerleaders, cross country, football, golf, soccer, softball, swimming,

tennis, track, volleyball, and wrestling. The club would be governed by a

five-member executive committee, combined with a 30-member board of

trustees. At the Feb. 6 meeting, trustees, representing each of the sports

involved, were elected. Members were appointed to the five committees of

the finance, advisory, public relations, fund raising, social, planning and

membership.

<TWO EVENTS THRILLING LINK>

   Two spectaculars became a little more thrilling than originally planned

this fall at the Bath stadium.

   To honor veterans, Bath Middle High School students, some 650 dressed

in red, white or blue, created an American flag that spanned more than 50

yards. The school arranged for two C-130 Hercules transport planes to

make a military flyover to conclude the program to honor the veterans. It

was quite a sight since the area is generally void of large aircraft.

Unfortunately, some residents saw the low-flying planes and feared

something terrorist-related was going on the refinery or chemical plan.

   The previous month, metallic streamers launched during the band's

halftime show blew into the high-voltage power lines and knocked out the

stadium lights for about 20 minutes. No one was hurt and Bath beat the

Shawnee Indians, 39-16.

<HOMECOMING/PROM DRESS EXCHANGE LINK>

Question: How can you reduce the expense of this years homecoming and

prom dress and what do you do with last year's? Answer: A

homecoming/prom dress exchange! "It's like a garage sale," according to

event organizer. The dresses are tagged with a sales price and the $6

charge goes to pay for post-prom activities. "It's a good way to circulate the

dresses," Green said. It's also a great idea!

<HOST VOLUNTEERS NEEDED LINK>

The Bath Elementary School is starting a new program called "HOSTS"

(Help One Student To Succeed.) This is a nationally recognized academic

mentoring program that pairs a student who needs help in reading with a

volunteer who wants to make a difference in a student's life. Community

volunteers are needed to serve as mentors one hour a week a school.

Contact Kathy (Penhorwood) McClintock (BHS '76) at the school (419) 221-

1837, ext. 4104, or [ mailto:mcclintok@bath.noacsc.org ]. Older alumni will

remember Kathy's father, Ken, a favorite teacher to many. She says he's

doing great at age 76 and is in good health.
