Welcome Bath High School alumni -- at least those who are on the Internet.

<BATH LINK> is a free newsletter for and about Bath alumni--anyone who

graduated or attended Bath High School. It features information about

classmates, reunions, school events, teachers, plus web site links, a pop

quiz, some humor or other items of alumni interest. If you don't have time to

read it all right now, save it and then read it when you do have the time.

Past issues of <BATH LINK> can now be read on the Bath Schools web

site. [ http://www.noacsc.org/allen/ba/Alumni.html ]

<SCHOOL FUNDING LINK>

Bath Township voters will decide on a five-year, 11-mill operating levy in

the March primary election. The levy renews combines two existing

operating levies and an increase to generate $2.8 million a year. The

increase would generate $2 million the first year and drop to $600,000 for

each of the next four years, according to Supt. William Lodermeier. The

district will not receive a Ford Motor Co. Lima Engine Plant tax abatement

until 2006. Bath schools are looking at a $500,000 deficit in 2005 due to

cuts in school funding and employee health insurance costs. Without

additional income the district would need to reduce the budget $1.4 million

in the 2005-06 school year.

<SCHOOL BOARD LINK>

Rob McPheron (BHS'72) was elected president of the bath school board.

Bob Birkemeier (BHS'71) was elected vice president. Both are starting their

third year as board members.

(The following is an Editorial published in The Lima News Dec. 23, 2003)

BATH STUDENTS GET CAREER BOOST

Bath High School students, who are considering technology and industrial

careers soon will receive a tremendous boost from Ford Motor Co. The

world's No. 2 automaker in January 2005 will bring to the high school its

Ford Partnership for advanced Studies program, an experience-based

industry and technology curriculum.

We often hear that students need to learn real-world skills and schools

need to do a better job of preparing young people to enter the work force.

No one is better equipped to help schools do that than one of the industry

giants who one day will employ some of these young people. Every day,

Ford employees use the skills they'll be teaching Bath students. Through

field trips and professionals visiting the classes, the students will see the

skills they are learning apply to the real world.

And, Ford is going to train a local pool of people who one day might put

the instruction they receive to use at the Ford Lima Engine Plant.

Ford developed the curriculum, which meets standards set by the state,

and will train Bath teachers how to instruct students. Students who elect to

take the classes will begin with a semester in their sophomore years and

then can continue with two semesters' worth of work each in their junior and

senior years.

Students can earn up to 15 credit hours at James A. Rhodes State

College or the University of Northwestern Ohio. The Bath program is the

first in the state to have a college credit agreement with the Ford program.

Rhodes, Northwestern and OSU-Lima also have agreed to make

scholarships available to students in the program.

That's great news for the students, the school district and the industrial

base in this part of Ohio. It's also a great example of the private sector

stepping up to address a problem rather than waiting for a government

institution to address it.

<HIGH SCHOOL PROFILE LINK>

According the information from the high school office, there are 580

students enrolled in the high school and 120 at the Apollo Career Center.

An experienced staff 38 full-time teachers, as well as community support,

provides continuity, stability and excellence at Bath High School. As a

result, students begin their careers in high school with an appreciation of

education. This appreciation extends past high school as 75% of the

students continue their education immediately after graduation. With the

availability of surrounding colleges, Bath students have an excellent

opportunity to participate in the post-secondary options program. Over one

million dollars in scholarships was earned by the Class of 2001.

The school year consists of 182 days, between Aug. 26 and May 26.

During the school year, five days are permitted to be excused as calamity

days. The school day begins at 8:15 a.m. with announcements and

concludes at 3:15 p.m. Classes are conducted during seven 50 minute

periods. There are three separate half-hour lunch periods, scheduled from

12:06 to 1:26 p.m.

   The high school uses the following grading scale: A (90-100)=4 pts;

B (80-89)=3 pts; C (70-79)=2 pts; D (60-69)=1 pt; F (59-0)=0 pts.

There are 20 class credits required for graduation, with a 3.5 GPA for the

first seven semesters required for an honors diploma.

According to the Ohio Department of Education, in 2003 Bath Schools

spent $6,486 to educate each student, compared to the state average of

$7,505.

Bath High School exceeded all state standards for the last four years and

the graduation rate is 90.1%, compared to the state average of 70.9%

According to the Ohio High School Athletic Association, Bath is a AA High

School with 260 boys and 245 girls for a total of 505 students.
