<SCHOOL HISTORY

(reprinted from Wildcat
Press Vol. 1, Oct. 5, 1956)
History of Bath School
By Caroline Driver (BHS
'57)
When children first came to Bath School,
January 6, 1937, the doors
closed on nine little
red school houses in Bath Township. The building built
to accommodate about 350
pupils consisted of nine classrooms, library ,
cafeteria, kitchen,
auditorium, and office. After only a year or two the
cafeteria was made into
a classroom. Then the need arose for more
classrooms and
classrooms were formed in the bus garage. Soon more
rooms were needed and in
1948 it was decided to make the garage bigger
and four new classrooms
and some bus stalls were added. In the
school-year of 1950 and
1951 twelve more classrooms and a spanking new
cafeteria were added.
All this time the student body was
increasing, the faculty grew in
proportion. During this
period and growth, half-day schedules were adopted
to help take care of the
continual crowded situation.
High school students, during this time,
attended schools in nearly every
direction, Beaverdam,
Lima Central, and LaFayette, but then in the last few
years transportation was
provided to LaFayette and nearly all high-school
students transferred
there. People in our township began to see the need of
a high school of our own
and in 1954 a bond issue was passed to provide
money for a high school
of our own. What a thrill it has been for our
parents who have planned
and dreamed for a new high school to see their
dream come true. Many
long hours were spent by school officials in making
this dream come true. It
is up to our generation to do our best so that we
may live up to the
ideals set forth for us.
Now let us go back to the nine little
schoolhouses. One has become a
grange hall (Boop
School), one has been destroyed and buried by the Ford
plant (Sulphur Springs),
one a building used for grain storage (Sugar Creek
School), one was moved
across the road and is now used for a dwelling
(Lutz School). Five more
are used for family homes in their original
locations (Bluelick,
Lordstown, Thayer, Waldord, and Bresler Schools).
